Introduction

The Amharic-RedHat package contains files needed to configure an optional Amharic desktop environment. Amharic does not become the default interface language, it merely becomes one more available language that will be found in the "Language" menu at login time.

The package will install new files for Amharic (locales, fonts, message catalogs) and will update existing files specific to RedHat version 9. The changes made to updated files are additive, that is they contain additional information required for Amharic and do not modify or destroy the original data.

Installation

  1. download http://gnome.geez.org/Amharic/amharic-redhat9-0.4p-0.i386.rpm
  2. Open a shell as root: % rpm -i --force amharic-redhat9-0.4p-0.i386.rpm
  3. Exit your window session.
  4. Under the "Languages" menu of the login screen, select "Amharic"

Hopefully, you see something like:

Using the Amharic Input Method

The Amharic input method will now be used by default. Even in some cases where you may not wish it -such as dialogs that ask for your password and a Gnome Terminal. To switch between the Amharic input method and the default you will need to right-click your mouse with the pointer in an editable area. Doing so you will see a sub menu with the title "Input Methods". Open the sub menu to select a new input method.

It is not always easy to find an editable area to change your input method. In a gnome-terminal, for instance, you will need to open Edit >> Current Profile... then right-click your mouse into "Profile name", go to "Input Methods", select "Default". You may now type in English or your default language in the shell. The "Edit" menu will appear as "አስተካክል" if the Amharic setup was successful.

Font Settings

You will need to manually set the fonts that GNOME is using to maximize your desktop experience. Open your "RedHat" menu, select ምርጫዎች >> የፊደል ቅርጽ and make the following settings:

Application font: ClearlyU 10
Desktop font: ClearlyU 12
Window title font: ClearlyU 12
Terminal font: Fixed 10

In your Gnome terminal open አስተካክል >> የአሁኑን ግለ መግለጫ... >> check "Use the same font as other applications". This tells the Gnome terminal to use the settings you've configured in the previous step.

Desktop Shortcuts:

To get the ኢትዮዜና desktop shortcut as shown in the "AmharicWorkspace.png" image , create a file (like "zena") in your ~/.gnome-desktop file with these contents:

-----------save in ~/.gnome-desktop/zena---- [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Encoding=UTF-8 Name=ኢትዮዜና Type=Link URL=http://www.ethiozena.net/ X-Nautilus-Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/zena.png -------------------------------------------
